Bullfighting is just about over in Catalonia. The current season will be the very last. Then, finally, this quirky throwback will become more of a museum than it already is, with its very traditional offerings served in faded 1960s splendour. Hidden along a side street, this cheap and cheerful spot is replete with old photos, posters, bulls’ heads and Cordobes hats on the peeling walls of connected dining rooms. Tapas, including rabo de toro (bull’s tail, but usually actually oxtail, stew) and full meals served with carafes of house red and sangría. Just off the Ramblas. Very family friendly. Open Sunday evenings. Don’t forget your sombrero. ¡Olé!

While Staying in Barcelona Hostal Residencia Australia, we went to have a nice lunch in Tossa Restaurant, very good food and service !
Given that it’s such a short stroll from the Sagrada Família church, and the quality of the food, I’m always surprised there aren’t more tourists here. Reasonably priced and with very friendly service, it has a terrace usually filled with families, but there’s plenty of room inside. You’ll find a chilled family atmosphere. Try their delicious homemade croquetas, probably the best in the city: mushroom, foie gras, chicken, cheese and vegetable. Extensive range of very fresh tapas, including stuffed eggs, jacket potatoes filled with tuna and topped with cheese, baby clams,navajas (razor clams), salpicón de marisco (seafood salad), chocos (strips of squid in oil and parsley), sausages and cold meats.

Enjoy. Ensure you keep all the toothpicks as these will be counted at the end of your session. Each pintxo costs €1.55. Good selection of wines, including txakoli, ciders and Almogàver beer on tap.

Dear friends, Barcelona Hostal Residencia Australiasagrada familia today´s recommendation is if you plan to visit La Sagrada Familia there is no need to wait in line for tickets inside, as we did. It is much easier to buy your tickets for an appointed time at any la Caixa bank ATM machine (these are all over Barcelona). The cost at the door is 18 euros and I believe la Caixa charges the same.

Construction on this building began in 1882. Gaudi got involved a year later. It is expected, with the use of stone-carving machinery and computers to be completed in 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s death. If work were to continue as it was going in the early 1900′s, without computers and modern machinery, it would not be completed for several hundred more years. When the tallest spire is added, it will be the tallest church in the world.
Gaudi was deeply religious. Somehow he expanded his mind so far outside the realm of normal it could only be described as genius. The fact that he put in motion a plan that was so entirely outrageous and difficult and that it has been followed by thousands of people to create what I saw today is what blows me away. Every tiny detail, and there are thousands and thousands, is so thoughtfully designed. And the intricacy and science behind the construction – it is inconceivable. The last time I felt that sense of awe and total amazement about the ingenuity of man, was when I saw Machu Picchu for the first time.
If you ever have a chance to visit, do not pass it up. It will change you as it did me. Promise

The Building
The Fundació opened its doors in June 1990 in the building of the
former Editorial Montaner i Simon publishing house, the work of the
Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i MontanerRestored and refurbished
by the architects Roser Amadó and Lluís Domènech Girbau. Constructed
between 1880 and 1881 or 1882, at an early stage of the evolution of
Catalan Modernism, the building was the first in the Eixample district
to integrate industrial typology and technology, combining exposed
brick and iron, into the fabric of the city centre.

Macba – Barcelona In1959 the art critic Alexandre Cirici Pellicer believed in the need to create a Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona.

MACBA (Barcelona Contemporary Art Museum) is dedicated to works from the second half of the 20th century. There are few works in the permanent collection and once in a while interesting temporary exhibitions.
Between 1960 and 1963, Cirici and Cesáreo Rodriguez Aguilera headeed a group of individuals who began to put together a collection with the objective of constituting the basis for the future museum. In February 1963, the opening of the exhibition El arte y la paz, with a clear political commitment, exposed the narrow limits of what was then permissible.

In 1986 Barcelona City Council, invited the North American architect Richard Meierto take charge of the project for the new museum. The City Council’s Department of Culture commissioned the art critics Francesc Miralles and Rosa Queralt to draw up a report which would serve to define the philosophy of the future museum. In 1987 theMACBA Foundation brought private enterprise into the project. The MACBA was officially inaugurated on the 28th of November of 1995.

Dear friends, our today’s Barcelona Hostal Residencia Australia recommendation is “Cova Fumada”
nice place to enjoy seafood.

This old hole in the wall serves simple dishes bursting with flavor. It’s
a small, busy, friendly place – you may have to prop yourselves at the bar
before sharing a table with a couple of locals, like dining in a large
family kitchen. They’re famed for their *bombas *(meat-filled mashed-potato
balls rolled in breadcrumbs) served with a choice of three sauces, graded
by spiciness – *salsa del diablo *being the hottest. And then there’s the
bread – try the *pa amb all i oli *– huge slices of grilled bread slathered
with fresh, homemade garlic mayonnaise. Simple, but it works. Try the
marinaded sardines, the fried artichokes, squid and the *bacallà *(salt
cod) with a tomato salad.

A nice one or two day trips.

Catalunya is a fascinating region. I adore it´s natural beauty. I also love walking through it and hopefully taking part of that beauty with me back home in my dreams and wishes.

I just came back from a two day walk on the cami de san jaume , a new extension of the Camino de Santiago, just north of Barcelona that goes through the volcanic region of La Garrotxa.

It´s very easy and beautiful.

Summarising you walk , eat good cheap food, take pictures, laugh, sweat and be happy.

How to achieve such?

You take an express bus to Olot, a small town, at the bus stop that is just 5 blocks away from where we are.

Once in Olot from the old train station you start walking on the via Verde del carrilet which is a route following the old railroad track that joins Olot and Girona. You can also cycle but then you rush past places.

This track goes through a lot of towns. So you have a rest point , hotels, restaurants , shops every 5 to 8 km.

No need to carry much food, water nor camping gear.

So your first worry would be in what town to have lunch and the menu del dia which is a festive occasion on it´s own with wine , three courses of good home cooking, desserts, and coffee for about 11 euros.

After lunch we suffer a bit more walking for a few hours and then we choose where to sleep as you also have nice hostels every 10 km . I stayed in a very nice hostel had a great supper again a supper of three courses .

A little town along the way from Olot to Girona

The track takes three days to complete but you can do one , two or three nights . When you get tired you wait for the bus in one of the towns along the way, go to Girona and there take the train to Barcelona.

For buses along the track that goes from Olot to Girona you have one every couple of hours.

How to get there?

Well from Hostal Australia, take the train to el Prat ( 10 km) and walk or rent a bike. You have a train every 10 minutes.

A good traditional and modern tapas bar, with not many tourists very close to Hostal Residencia Australia

Bohemica shows a retro decoration and a selection of tapas called 1900 and another called 2000.
The 1900 tapas would be the traditional as the “patatas bravas” the brave potatoes , “buñuelos de bacaloo” fried cod in batter, small squids, roasted beef croquets and many more.
The 2000 selection would be a more creative one , grilled foie, the micuit , a beef carpaccio served with apple foam, tuna sashimi pizza, hare cannelloni ( Rabbit, more or less)
Frances Gimeno is the chef.
The cured meats are good and also try a beverage very difficult to find and very typical of cataluna, “el vermut casero”.
For some nice tapas you might end up spending around 20 to 25 euros per person.

Today I recommend an interesting day out in Callela, a small town right next to Barcelona and on the coast. On the 12th and 13th of June they celebrate a medieval fare showing Catalan life back in the good old days.

Just imagine what life would have been like. No need for manners, you could be filthy as a pig and still be loved. Nothing like fighting until death for your loved one. Things have not changed since then, have they? . When we wanted a girl we would just show up and chop off any competitors head. Yes things were good in the old days.

I have just read through the programme they advertise and it seems like fun.

You will be able to make a tapestry for Grandma or some warm underwear.

And of course you will be able to eat what they were eating back then. This I am really looking forward as I have always wanted to have a wild boar for myself as in Asterix and Obelix
